Still working on tweaking George’s design. The version on the bottom is the result of the client asking for a more … macho? masculine? athletic? … version of the character. I wasn’t exactly sure what they were looking for but they didn’t care for the result. They thought he looked kind of intimidating, less friendly with the added mass. So George stayed thin.

George the Thicker looks like he’s going places. He probably got an alma mater scholarship to Harvard from his father. His hair is perfectly coiffed; not a stray thread on his jacket.
George the Thinner has had to work for everything he’s got in life. He clearly has a hard time affording food. Maybe he was the runt of the litter. He’s eager to please and make friends.

The client did say that George the Thicker seemed too smug for their tastes.
Upon further inspection, I also noticed that George the Thinner is drawn from the perspective of someone A) taller or B) standing on a chair. George the Thicker looks at you almost straight in the eye. I wonder if that’s part of the intimidation/smug factor.

That’s a very good observation. I’ll have to keep perspective in mind when doing character design in the future. I constantly forget that just because I’m seeing a character from a variety of perspectives in my head the rest of the world only sees what’s on the page.
