I think in this instance, pole to pole is referring to the night sky being dark from East to West, North to South. In other words, the poles, such as you would see on a compass.
Yes, and in this instance the poles are the opposite ends of the body, from top to bottom, from head to toe , my entire body is covered by the dark-as-pit night.
