Designing George

This the first of a number of development sketches for the character of George. George is the mascot for a series of self help legal books. He went by a number of different names before they decided on that George. The client was looking for a character that seemed friendly, trustworthy and knowledgeable. It took us a while before we got a design that worked for everybody.

Happy Books

These are development sketches I worked up for a mascot character for a book packaging company. He was used as part of a diagram to show the different stages for writing, editing and printing a book.

Pumpkin Weasel

One of my co-workers at the day job asked me to do an illustration for the label of his homebrewed beer. He and a friend had a tradition of brewing a pumpkin ale in the fall. They called the beer Pumpkin Weasel. Here’s the black and white version. I’ll look around and try to have the color version up tomorrow.

Happy New Year!

Say hello to 2008. I’ve got another sketchbook’s worth of posts set up that should carry us into February. Life is still pretty busy but with the Holiday jams passed by I think I’ll have time to keep up a daily rhythm here again.

Today’s sketch was done this month. It was intended for a future issue of Worlds of Cthulhu for an article on gangsters. The editor and I had some miscommunication and the job for illustrating the article has gone to someone else. No biggie, he was needing more illustrations than I can provide at the moment and has assigned me to a different article.

BRP – Valley of Bones

This is the last sketch I’ll be showing for the Basic Roleplaying manual. There are illustrations in the book that sort of bypassed the approval process. I was contracted for 30 pieces in all.

I’m not sure what I’ll be posting next. Another sketchbook seems logical but I don’t currently have one scanned and it’s not looking like I’ll have much time for a few days. So it nothing appears here it just means I’m really busy out in meatspace.

BRP – God Squad

“What If?” is a handy question to use when trying to think of story ideas, gaming ideas, illustration ideas.

“What if Tarzan had been the son of a Chinese prince instead of an English lord?”

“What if Revelations started happening the way the evangelicals said it would?”

“What if you had a doorway to the past in your closet?”

The illustration here was inspired by the question “What if Doc Savage and his gang were a bunch of holy men instead of scientists?”
