Marvel and DC comics hold a joint trademark on the words “superhero” and “superheroes”. If you want you can tell stories about superheroes. You just can’t use the term in your advertising and marketing. Superman and Spider-Man can be called superheroes. Doc Savage and the Shadow cannot.

BRP – The Worm Ninja
I’m currently illustrating two books for Chaosium. The one needing to get finished first is the Basic Roleplaying Manual. I’m having a lot of fun with it. Since the manual is a rule book rather than a scenario book my role is provide inspiration for the players rather illustrate a specific scene. I’m making an effort to be as diverse as possible with my illustration subjects.
I’ll be presenting preliminary sketches for many of the illustrations over the next few weeks. Some of the sketches have stories behind their inspiration. Some of them, like the one here, just came to me without a lot of thought.
Mansions of Madness – Caleb and Guillame
This is the last of the Mansions of Madness sketches. For a look at the final illustrations and the scenario that they are visualizing go buy the book.
Mansions of Madness – Tsathaoggua
Some Cthulhu Mythos entities are more of a challenge to depict than others. Tsathoggua is one of those. Descriptions of him/it are vague enough that he could be depicted in myriad ways. Unfortunately he/it has already been depicted often enough in Call of Cthulhu that I felt like there was a basic form I should stick to. I didn’t want to stray so far away from previous depictions that he/it would be completely unrecognizable. Some of those previous depictions are almost cute. And not very threatening.
I do like how this one turned out. I don’t think he’s cute. Your mileage may vary.
