Poor Guilala. He only starred in one movie – The X from Outer Space yet he’s been listed on more than one list of goofy looking monsters. This is my unfinished attempt at a more “serious” looking version of the fellow.

Unfinished Varan
This was intended for my gallery at Kaijuphile.com but for whatever reason I never finished it. It’s a redesign of Varan the Unbelievable.
Death Gamera
This is a scan of the base art for one of my favorite pieces of giant monster art.
King Seesar
This is a scan of the original art for my color King Seesar portrait.
Space Godzilla
This is a scan of the original pencils for my portrait of Space Godzilla. The final version can be found here.

Return of the Unfinished Kaiju
This is another one of my attempts to do a redesign of Gigan that I liked. The fact that I keep trying to come up with one says more about my own occasional inability to love the absurd than it indicates the possibility of a good “organic” design. Japanese entertainment is full of wildly ridiculous monsters. For the most part Godzilla’s adversaries and allies are, at least in my kid mind, somehow, rational designs for monsters. They’re radioactive dinosaurs, space dragons, giant insects or well armed robots. Gigan is a new wave parrot headed dandy with hook hands and a buzzsaw in his chest. He’s goofy. Maybe one day I’ll just accept that and let him be.
Grandmother Hydra
In The Shadow Over Innsmouth H.P. Lovecraft introduced the deep ones; immortal ocean dwelling amphibians that traffic with humanity for dark, evil purposes. Over the years other authors expanded on Lovecraft’s mythology and the deep ones have shown up in numerous stories, games and even a film or two.
Grandmother Hydra here was inspired by the idea that deep ones don’t stop growing as they get older. I added the idea that old deep one sorcerers could mutate themselves by adding aspects of other sea creatures and then started sketching. Hydra seemed like she’d make a good adversary for King Roach.
Another Milpitas Monster
I did this piece as sort of a palette cleaner after finishing up the Basic Roleplaying illustrations. For the earlier version I did of this creature I tried to stick closer to the monster’s original done-on-the-cheap design. This time I just let my imagination go where it wanted.
