Up and Running

Moving may be a pain but there’s at least one thing that I can appreciate about this one – I now have access to a bunch of my old art that was stuck in boxes. That were buried under other boxes.

One of the other tricks about living in a new place (and working at a new job) is rebuilding habits. I forget how much I rely on my habits to get things done until I have to come up with new ones. Posting here is one of my habits so I’m glad to finally be able to be doing it on a regular basis.

This sketch is undated but I’m guessing it’s from 2000 or so. This fellow looks like a character from the early incarnation of King Roach – a military operative assigned to capture KR.

The General

This illustration is from 2001. The old man here was one of the first human villains in that version of King Roach. He was retired general who ran a top secret bioweapons research organization. Among other, more conventional weapons, the organization made monsters. Yes, that was a cliche in 2001 even before that became a basic plot element of every other Scifi (Syfy) movie.

Good Ol’ What’s His Name

I never remember this poor kid’s name. I’m sure I wrote it down somewhere but that doesn’t do me any good this morning. He’s Brian Daniels’ other friend. He has an older brother who is a jock who has occasionally dated Brian’s older sister who is a cheerleader.

Lucas Braeburn

This is Lucas Braeburn, one of Brian Daniels’ friends. Lucas’s father was a big Star Wars fan and named his son after George Lucas, the director of the movie.

Brian Daniels

Brian Daniels, King Roach’s original alter ego, in a drawing from the year 2000. Or 2001. Either way this is from when I was first inventing the character and when the story was set in present day USA.

Humans

One of my many sketches featuring different species of humanity. Species, not races. Any interbreeding would have result in sterile children. I’m fascinated with the idea that Homo Sapiens is just one of, perhaps, many forms of human beings. What would the world have looked like if the other species had not died out?

Page One, Mara Not Brian

Mara Winikat is the current alter ego of King Roach. This image is a scan of the first page of a sketchbook from 2002. I did this sketch soon after I’d realized that Brian Daniels, my original choice for the human half of King Roach, was going to drive me crazy if I had to live with him as protagonist. Poor Brian is unfortunately too much like me – whiny and reluctant to act. Bad enough I have to hang out with me all the time. Mara is actually excited about being able to turn into a giant bug.
