Megalon

Speaking of ridiculous Godzilla villains that I can’t stop tinkering with – here’s a version of Megalon, the humanoid beetle with drills instead of hands.

Return of the Unfinished Kaiju

This is another one of my attempts to do a redesign of Gigan that I liked. The fact that I keep trying to come up with one says more about my own occasional inability to love the absurd than it indicates the possibility of a good “organic” design. Japanese entertainment is full of wildly ridiculous monsters. For the most part Godzilla’s adversaries and allies are, at least in my kid mind, somehow, rational designs for monsters. They’re radioactive dinosaurs, space dragons, giant insects or well armed robots. Gigan is a new wave parrot headed dandy with hook hands and a buzzsaw in his chest. He’s goofy. Maybe one day I’ll just accept that and let him be.

NPCs

NPCs are Non Player Characters in RPG (Role Playing Game) vernacular. These guys were done for an issue of The Black Seal that isn’t out yet. Adam went and became a father and got another editor position and became a complete slacker.

(I kid Adam. We won’t go into the projects I’ve been in the middle of for years (and years) now myself.)

These are recent scans from my sketchbook. The final illustrations have been photoshopped a bit. You’ll have to wait until The Black Seal comes out to see what the results look like.

Baybeeee!

This ended up being the cover of the church bulletin one week. Friends of ours; members of the church, had just become parents (again) and I was inspired to draw this critter.
