The next image in the sketchbook is of Gyaos, one of the monster Gamera’s most popular foes. It’s the first of a series of monster portraits I did for Kaijuphile. I was playing around to see what sort of color effects I could get using a mix of colored pencils and digital colors. The finished version is here in my Kaijuphile gallery. The final image was colored in Photoshop. Checking the upload dates it looks like I returned to this sketchbook even later than I’d thought. This image is from June of 2005.
Detritus, Moe and Lili, Now In Color
I think I used this image for May in my 2003 calendar. Unfortunately I don’t have a calendar handy to check. This was the last image in the sketchbook from 2002. I set it aside for about a year. The next image in it is from 2004. But that’s for tomorrow.

Not At All Human
The goal for this sketch was to draw an alien scene, something weird and strange but not so weird and strange that the drawing became an abstract.

What’s going on here? Are these people friends? Are they human beings, two of whom have had their looks altered? Are they three different species?

I don’t remember if I submitted this finished version to Epilogue.net or not. If I did it must have been rejected but since I don’t remember a rejection I suspect that I didn’t bother to submit.

In which a group of jocks learn the hard lesson – don’t pick on freaky kids with poor social skills, they might gain the ability to turn into giant monsters and come beat your ass.
King Roach vs Saur Thirteen
While the basic premise of King Roach (kid becomes monster to fight other monsters) has remained the same since the first inspiration, the setting of the series has shifted many times. Sometimes I’ve imagined the story taking place in modern day Seattle. Sometimes it happens in a 1950’s milieu. Sometimes I imagine King Roach as a guide to the Sentient 39 universe; traveling from world to world, dealing with strange human cultures and stranger alien ones. And fighting monsters of course.
The other creature in this sketch is Saur Thirteen, one of those military experiments gone wrong. Saur Thirteen has skulked around my imagination for a couple of decades now. Sometimes he’s a mindless beserker. Sometimes he’s highly intelligent, a reptilian secret agent/soldier. In this version he’s been tamed by a teenage girl and is acting as the protector of a group of outcasts.
Crawling Chaos
Nyarlathotep is one of H.P. Lovecraft’s more active creations. He (she, it) has a multitude of avatars. He gets involved with humanity. He pays attention to what we do. He plays with us. The rest of the Great Old Ones take as much notice of us as we do of ants.

Witchcraft
This sketch is based on an illustration I did years earlier of a levitating witch. The witch in the earlier illustration was clothed in flowing robes.
